Chapter Ten

Lydia’s Escape

The girls bid the gentlemen a fond farewell from Brighton. Darcy and Bingley had promised to return in time for Kitty’s party and Colonel Fitzwilliam swore he would look in on the young ladies in the gentlemen’s absence.

Lizzy had told only Jane and Mary of Darcy’s proposal, but it seemed that walls did indeed have ears for Kitty and Lydia rushed into the room to congratulate her.

“I dare say he is rich Lizzy, but I should want a merrier fellow for my husband.” Lydia remarked. “He has such a look of boredom about him, as handsome as he is.”

“Thank you Lydia, but I like him very well as he is.” Lizzy replied.

“Colonel Fitzwilliam talks very highly of his cousin.” Mary added.

“As do I about Lydia, but who would believe it?” Kitty laughed.

The reassurance of Lizzy’s marriage was a balm to them all. For Lydia and Kitty tried to imagine what Pemberley looked like and what type of room they should have when they came to stay. For Lizzy the thought of going to live there was a mixture of excitement and fear. She knew that Darcy spoke to her of it as her home too now, and she took some comfort in the thought that where she lived would not be at the dictation of the militia, always moving with nowhere to settle.

She tried to glean from Jane if Bingley had hinted to her of any such event. But Jane would only shyly smile.

“What he has told me Lizzy, is that when he returns from town he will have a question to ask.” Jane explained. “Of course I have no sworn assurances that it will be an offer of marriage.”

“Oh Jane, of course it will be. I am so happy for you.”

“But Lizzy, are you sure of your feelings for Mr Darcy?” Jane asked. “I would not want you to go into marriage as a way of escaping all that has gone before.”

“You need not worry Jane, for I love him completely. I will admit that it was not always so, but the more I know him the better I like him. And I had not realised that for sometime, that my liking had turned into love.”
